Very informed and interesting piece on the Mini Marcos; they really are incredible cars to drive, especially when the surface is wet and others are backing off! As a schoolboy I wrote to Marcos enquiring about the Marcos 1800 GT, I received a large envelope and comprehensive reply, including expensive brochures and a hand-written full page reply from Jem Marsh who suggested that I should contact them again when I was old enough to apply for a driving licence (17)! A true Gentleman.

I saw 35AAA59 at the 2006 Le Mans Classic in the paddock; my photos show it with less paint on it than it has in the shots above; the bonnet halves in particular were almost completely devoid of paint; having said that I’m glad it hasn’t been restored and become “just another Bug”!

i am a panel maker. some years ago i refurbished a 1934 indianapolis 500 based on a graham automobile. it was reputed to be the first race car finished with a then new irridescent Pearle Essence blue. a short time after its debut at the amelia island concours, the Lucenti Special changed owners and moved to france. i know that it was run in one of the mille miglia events in the last ten years and i was wondering if sports car digest had any information or photography about it. thank you.

I enjoyed this article about the Lingotto Fiat assembly plant. I own a 1962 Austin Cooper and have watched the original “Italian Job” a few dozen times. While searching EBAY I found an original post card dated Oct 1 1923 of the aerial photo of Lingotto. The same photo you show above. I recognized the high banked ends of the test track from the movie. The card was post marked from TURIN FERROVIA and sent to Billingaham England.

I live in Trabuco Canyon, not far from the event, and regularly attended “Cars & Coffee” at Ford for years. One time I drove my 1964 Bill Thomas Cheetah to the event. The same Cheetah that I ran at Monterey for many years. Another time my daughter drove the 1964 Corvette roadster that she races at Monterey. It was fun to see the looks when my daughter, with my 12 year old grand daughter in the passenger seat, pulled in and parked with ease.

Nicely done history of the 410 and my father- a true prespective without the fictional spin so prevalent back then. I was no more than 7 or 8 years old during the car’s brief history, but vividly remember those days. Racing in those days was a true family affair. Thank you for finishing the article on a high note! I kept in touch with Carroll and Jack McAfee over the years.

Morgan has long been a revered brand in the automotive world. My connection with the company goes all the way back to the original family, through Peter Morgan. So here we have a model announcement that totally avoids the mechanicals of the car while going on endlessly about interior materials as though they are selling couches…or Italian couture…and with more nonsensical grammatical errors than I can count.
As for the future of the automotive brand ‘Morgan’…vedremo.

Yes OK for your list but surely the McLaren F1 was a marketing failure with all the others cought out by the oil crisis. Never sold the annual volumes planned and only by selling modified racing versions saved it from your list and made the mythical list.

On the XJ 220, there was certainly nothing “tamer” about the V6. The 6.2 liter 12 put out 500 HP/400 lb-ft and the 6 that had proven itself in the Group B before being modified by TWR for their XJR-10 and XJR-11 cars put out 542 HP/475 lb-ft while shaving weight. I saw aninterview with a TWR engineer in-period that was just dumbfounded by the public’s reaction. (Paraphrased) We showed off the concept with our race engine installed. Of course, as we got better, more powerful engines in the race program, we modified the plans for the XJ220. Faster, lighter, more dependable… I don’t understand.”

Engineers don’t get that sometimes people who spend a half $million on their automobile may care more about excess than performance. 🙂

I would never include the Ferrari Mondial as a Supercar and I would never consider the BMW M1 to be a failure. The rules changed, but the M1 remains a gorgeous, well engineered masterpiece.

The Mona Lisa is now 500+ years old. Today’s million dollar cars will be worth a billion dollars in the future. The price paid for the Uhlenhuat Mercedes-Benz SLR is grossly overvalued. The syndicate or individual who made the purchase has only another 400 years to go before reaching a billion dollars.

This must be the first piece I’ve read on the MX5 which doesn’t refer to the original Lotus Elan: as a serial Elan owner since the 1970s I’ve got to put that right!
I believe that the MX5 is the car which literally saved the small sports car; prior to its introduction it looked like that category would just fade away, that it is still in production all these years later really makes a statement. OK, so it is slightly larger and much heavier than the original but much of that has been dictated by changing legislation.
I’m not a personal fan of these over-long niche model trim designation but aside from that I could live with one!

The first Chaparral had a 327 with triple two barrel carbs. A real Southern Cal set up. In it’s first race, at Laguna Seca Hall faced Dan Gurney in the latest O’l Yaller, a Bird cage and a 250 Testa Rosa. I think that was in 1957 and I was in 8th grade. Sitting on the hill outside turn one. The track then had no infield portion but a sweeping long fast fast turn up to turn three what is now six. I think Hall dropped out and Gurney won. Or maybe not. I’ll go to goggle and look it all up.

Rex McAfee’s smart narrative and stunning photography in this article add up to top of the podium quality, and what a treat it all is to read and see the talent that can take a reader to the event with such ease and satisfaction. I have known Rex for years and knew his father Jack from decades ago when he drove MG, Ferrari, and Porsche racing cars for my own father’s John Edgar Enterprises team.
